A continuation of this entry; was I right? Was I wrong? You'll never know unless you read more...
In this entry I made some guesses about what I thought my classes. Here's how things are actually turning out:
Chem 251H - Organic Chemistry Honors - Wow, had my first quiz in this class in recitation and I definitely got a 6/10. :-( That's what happens when you play with the big boys, I guess. It was kind of frustrating--I felt like I knew the material, but just lacked that critical bit of chemical insight to get this one tricky question right. Kinda sucks. Hoping I'll do better on the next one--anyway, this class isn't too difficult just yet but we'll see if that is still true in a couple weeks, since we're officially past any review material.
Physics 111 - Mechanics and Heat - Not as easy as I thought it would be! :-( I really struggled a bit with the first problem set until I figured out all the equations. Whenever I'm in the class, I'm torn between frustration at concepts that are inherently easier to work through with calculus (i.e. wishing I would have opted for the calculus-based Physics 131-133 series) and such a distaste for the material that I don't even care that it's unnecessarily convoluted. Anyway, I just can't wait to get through this class. :-(
Public Health 400 - Introduction to Public Health - I ended up deciding to drop this class. I thought about it, and realized that the main reason I wanted to take Public Health was to explore its potential as an alternative career path to dentistry...but I don't think I like it enough. I actually went to Pre-Dental Club for the first time yesterday and really liked it--I'm looking forward to finding out more about the field. I still have the textbook, and I might end up just reading it for fun....(yeah right! it's interesting but I don't have enough time...)
Spanish 401 - Advanced Grammar - I LOVE THIS CLASS. I love linguistics a lot, and the teacher is teaching with a lot of linguistics. So instead of bumbling around memorizing tenses and conjugations of verbs, we learned, among other things, eight different contexts in which present tense is used, what a verb is, and even got a bunch of sweet $10 words to make me feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Morfemas, desinencias, tiempo y aspecto...it's good stuff. And it's really crazy taking notes in Spanish!
BMS 320.01H - Honors Introduction to Research - The best kind of class: interesting and easy. :-) I feel really comfortable reading journal articles thanks to all my biomedical science classes now, and it's just nice to spend time with people in my major. I'm looking forward to hearing more from all the scientists' whose papers we're reading.
Chinese 211.51 - Still easy. :-P I'm learning a lot more Chinese from a couple friends in Taylor who are Chinese international students. I love learning Chinese! :-) I'm kind of bummed because I've realized/been told that I have an American Chinese accent...but I guess perfect pseudo-fluency in Chinese, a Category IV language according to the US Department of Defense, is already good enough. :P
Check back for more updates! That is, if I'm still alive after o-chem finishes with me. :-P
